Steps to a Story: The Read-Through

I just finished writing the second half of the With Honor cliffhanger.  I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out, and I hope you will be, too.

I have not scheduled it to post yet.

In a perfect world, I would have written this section with plenty of time to post if before Sunday.  We all know this isn’t a perfect world, and I am far from a perfect person.   If possible, I’d prefer to have completed the section at least by Wednesday, for revisions but also to allow time for the read-through.

I’ve mentioned before that I revise as I write.  This is true not just of my serials, but also of my novel.  Write a couple of chapters, revise, write a couple of chapters, revise.  This requires a bit of distance.  I try to take a break from my work for a little while before I read through it again.  Letting my brain think about other things and pull out of writing mode gives me a fresh look at what I’ve put on paper and makes the revisions more effective.

This is the downside to writing the story part tonight, the night before I need to post it.  I can still take a pause between writing and revising, but not as long as I could if the section had been written earlier in the week.  I’ll just hope that my revision is still effective and that the section turns out to be up to my standards.
