Don’t dance with eggs in your hands

You would think this lovely piece of advice would be unnecessary, but tonight I proved that wrong.

When I bake (or do anything in the kitchen, really) I turn on the radio.  This also means that when I’m in the kitchen, I’m usually dancing, at least a little bit.  Tonight I was baking blondies for a potluck at work tomorrow.  I pulled two eggs out of the fridge, held them in one hand, did my dancing thing and oops!  Egg on the floor.

We all do dumb things from time to time.  It’s what makes us human.  Sometimes doing the dumb thing is the only way to learn what to avoid in the future.

Life can’t always be perfect for book characters, either.  As readers we may shout at the book when someone is doing something remarkably idiotic (along the lines of “Don’t open the door!”) but if they survive it then it makes them smarter, stronger, and more believable.  As an author I have to remember to give my characters those bad decisions.  In fact, sometimes whole plots hinge on mistakes; if the character made the right choice in the first place, the story wouldn’t exist.

It’s fun to throw in silly mistakes too, ones that don’t impact the plot but add humor and develop the character.  I’m thinking maybe someone in one of my books should dance with eggs in her hands.  🙂
