With Feeling

I get very attached to my characters, especially because I act out some of the scenes as I write them.  For particularly emotional moments, I’ve given myself the thrill of new love, induced a panic attack, and even slammed my fist on the table and yelled!  All of this helps me to write feelings more effectively.

I discovered one of the difficulties of becoming involved with my characters when I was trying to conclude twin plot problems in my new novel.   I needed to resolve a relationship between two characters, and one of the characters (the female in the relationship) had to have a last push to free her gifts.

When John Mayer’s song Heartbreak Warfare came on the radio, it clicked.  And I started to cry.  Even now it breaks my heart.  I’ve killed off characters before, but this one hurts more than I expected.
